I had just spent two hours telling Red about my time, three years ago, with Jake Shelby. The last thing I expected was for him to walk into my place of business. I was stunned to the point of fear. I couldn’t move.

I wanted to run into his arms, but my legs wouldn’t let me. I wanted to turn around and look into his eyes, but I had changed. I knew we both had changed. What if I was no longer pleasing to him? I couldn’t bear the thought. The silence in the room was similar to a ticking time bomb with seconds left before it was going to explode. I had to do something.

“Red, get dressed and leave,” I demanded, without turning to look at either of them.

I could tell that she was reluctant to leave the room. I don’t think it was because she didn’t want to leave me alone. I thought it was because she wanted closure to the story that she had just heard. She wasn’t pleased with how it ended.

“Leave!” I bellowed.

I heard her jump from the table, put on her clothes and excuse herself when she passed Jake on her way out the door. Then I heard Jake take a step into the room.

“What are you doing here?” I asked just above a whisper.

He didn’t respond. I heard the door close and lock. I felt the pit of my stomach twist in knots.

“I’m not the little girl you once knew, Jake. It’s probably best that you leave.” Even as I said it, I didn’t mean it. I didn’t want him to leave. I wanted to turn around and look at him, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

“I’m not looking for that little girl, Alina. I’m looking for the woman who ran away from home to prove a point.”

My back was still toward him. I swallowed. “Then you’ve come to the right place.”

“Right,” he whispered. “So, I found the woman who ran away from home like a coward in the night with something that was mine—something precious that belonged to me.”

“What? I took nothing from you!” I nearly turned around to address him directly.

“Are you sure about that? Because I have proof that says you did.”

“What proof? Your cameras and your stepsister can accuse me of anything they want, but I’ve never stolen from you.”

Jake was now so close to me that his breath hit the back of my neck. I trembled. I closed my eyes and tilted my head back slightly when I felt his warm lips brush against the side of my neck.

He slid his arm around my waist, while his other hand gripped my right arm. My heart was beating out of control. My body trembled to feel his touch again. But I realized that this social call was going to come with consequences—unpaid consequences.

He growled, “You stole my heart, lil’ one!”

With those words, Jake’s fingers bit into my skin. I winced at his statement. I could hear the hurt in his voice.
